Former Site Scenic Area of the Caixi Township Investigation

The Former Site Scenic Area of the Caixi Township Investigation is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a key national cultural relics protection unit, and a classic red tourism destination.

The Caixi Red Tourism Scenic Area is located in Caixi Town, Shanghang County, known as the "Hometown of Models," "Hometown of Generals," and "Hometown of Architecture." The scenic area includes the Mao Zedong Caixi Township Investigation Memorial Hall, the Former Site of Mao Zedong’s Caixi Township Investigation, the Glory Pavilion, the Lenin Platform, as well as the Red Film Exhibition Hall at the Shanghang Integrity Education Base. It is now a "National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base," a national classic red tourism scenic area, and one of the thirty prime red tourism routes in China.

The Former Site Scenic Area of the Caixi Township Investigation mainly consists of key national cultural relics protection units such as the Caixi District Soviet Government, the Caixi District Trade Union (Lenin Hall), the Glory Pavilion, and the Caixi Township Investigation Memorial Hall. The scenic area has been rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction and is listed among the 100 classic red tourism sites and 30 premium red tourism routes in China.

During the long years of revolutionary struggle, the people of Caixi made tremendous contributions to China's liberation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. According to incomplete statistics, 3,400 young adults from Caixi Township joined the Red Army at that time, accounting for 80% of the total young adult population, and over 1,200 sacrificed their lives for the revolution, including more than 40 martyrs who were at the rank of regiment or higher. After the liberation, the township produced 10 generals, 4 ministerial-level officials, and 16 prefectural- or division-level cadres, earning Caixi the reputation as the "Hometown of Generals" — notably represented by the "Nine Armies and Eighteen Divisions."

Currently, the Former Site Scenic Area of the Caixi Township Investigation has been rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction, and is listed among the 100 classic red tourism sites and 30 premium red tourism routes in China.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) announced the Former Site Cluster of Mao Zedong’s Caixi Township Investigation as part of the seventh batch of key national cultural relics protection units.

Caixi Town: The renowned Shanghang “Caixi,” with its place name evolution, is quite an interesting story.

Over seven hundred years ago, the area around Caixi was dense mountain forest with gurgling streams and firewood readily available. The earliest settlers, an elderly couple surnamed Liu, called this place “Chai Xi” (Firewood Stream). To this day, the Liu family’s ancient settlement site is referred to by locals as Yuan Keng (“Original Pit”). “Yuan” means beginning.

Many years later, a merchant surnamed Chen traveling from Yu Kou Shi (now Jiuxian) to Bai Shi Cun (now downtown Changting) ventured deep into the forested heart of “Chai Xi” and lost his way.
