Xiputuo is the short name for Western Putuo Mountain in western Fujian. It is located at the junction of three townships—Lincheng, Baisha, and Jiuxian—and is just across the river from the county seat. Covering an area of 18 square kilometers, its highest peak, Jinyuding, stands at an elevation of 1003.7 meters. It is now a national forest park. Xiputuo has a long history, established in the Song Dynasty and flourishing in the Ming Dynasty. Since ancient times, there has been a saying: “Before there was Shanghang County, there was Xiputuo.” It gained fame through Buddhist teachings, thrived in Zen traditions, and became a renowned Buddhist holy site in the border region of Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi. During the Ming Dynasty, under the leadership of the famous Linji school monk Master Xianglin, it was described as having “hundreds of monks, thriving both in meditation and farming, with morning bells and evening drums echoing in harmony, incense smoke and lantern light shining brilliantly, and pilgrims coming shoulder to shoulder in an endless stream…” The scenic area now features developed attractions such as the Plum Garden, Maple Forest, Ancient Vine Garden, Xianglin Pagoda, and Yunfeng Temple.

Lincheng Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Shanghang County. In 1949, it was established as the Suburban District; in 1958, it was divided to form the Chengjiao People's Commune; in 1984, it was reorganized as Chengjiao Township; in 1986, it was renamed Lincheng Township; and in 1993, it was upgraded to a town. Located on the middle reaches of the Ting River and surrounding the county seat, it covers an area of 188.5 square kilometers with a population of 38,000.
