The Military History Square of the 73091 Unit of the Chinese People's Liberation Army stationed in Chuzhou is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

: The Military History Square of the 73091 Unit was completed in November 2009, covering an area of approximately 2,100 square meters. It mainly consists of two large architectural complexes to the east and west, along with a central sculpture group. Viewed from above, the western section resembles the Arabic numeral “2,” while the eastern section looks like a “6,” symbolizing that the unit originates from the old 6th Column of the 2nd Field Army. In the center of the square is a thematic group sculpture, recreating the scene of Chairman Mao conversing with two soldiers during his inspection in March 1960, during which he encouraged them to “study hard and live simply.” On both the east and west sides of the central pathway stand statues of six heroic figures with distinguished military records, including Guo Xingfu, known as the “Outstanding Instructor,” and Yang Chongyuan, hailed as the “Model Regimental Political Commissar.” The two major architectural complexes to the east and west of the square house four exhibition areas—“Glorious Journey,” “A Long Line of Heroes,” “Carrying Forward the Past and Opening the Future,” and “Keeping Pace with the Times”—as well as a Gallery of Generals and an auditorium. The first exhibition area uses marble steles to display the glorious wartime history during the Agrarian Revolutionary War, the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Liberation War, and the Korean War; the second exhibition area features 42 panels with rich illustrations and texts, comprehensively introducing eight main honored units and 16 key heroic individuals born within the unit; the third exhibition area uses 26 light boxes to reflect the major events that occurred after returning from Korea; the fourth exhibition area displays in the form of inscribed steles the encouraging words and inscriptions of Party and state leaders as well as senior military leaders at or above the deputy theater level during their inspections. The Gallery of Generals showcases 132 military officers and above who have emerged from the unit. The auditorium is fully equipped and feature-rich, using modern multimedia to present the illustrious journey of this elite force, effectively expanding and enriching the forms and content of national defense education.

The 73091 Unit was established in August 1945 in the Taihang Mountain Base Area and is an old unit under the command of Liu and Deng. It successively participated in major battles and campaigns such as the Southwestern Shandong Campaign, the Advance into the Dabie Mountains, the Xiangyang City Assault, the Chengdu Campaign, as well as the Jincheng Defense Operation and the Battle of Shangganling during the Korean War. The nationally renowned “Three Mutuals” of Wang Keqin and the “Guo Xingfu Teaching Method” originated from this unit. Three generations of Party leaders—Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Jiang Zemin—all personally inspected the unit and encouraged its soldiers. In April 1991, then Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, General Liu Huaqing, visited our unit in person and inscribed the words: “An Elite Force of the 2nd Field Army, the Cream of the 12th Army.”
