Former Residence of Wu Jingzi

The Former Residence of Wu Jingzi is a cultural relic protection unit of Chuzhou City.

The architectural style of the Former Residence of Wu Jingzi resembles that of Suzhou gardens, featuring the traditional courtyard structure of classical Chinese garden architecture. Stepping inside feels like entering a grand residential compound in the Jiangnan region.

The residence is divided into eight exhibition areas: the East Section of the Main House, the Middle Section of the Main House, the West Section of the Main House, the Folk Life Exhibition Area, the Ancestral Shrine “Yanling Hall,” the Book-Granting Tower, the Wenmu Mountain Studio, and the West Garden Open Pavilion. The interiors are furnished to recreate the style of the Qing Dynasty, giving visitors the feeling of stepping back in time to a Qing-era household. The exhibits in the Folk Life Exhibition Area, in particular, are exquisitely crafted. In front of the Book-Granting Tower, there are rockeries, pavilions, small bridges, and a lotus pond, creating beautiful scenery that is not to be missed.

Wu Jingzi (1701–1754), courtesy name Minxuan, art name Limin, was a Qing Dynasty novelist of Han ethnicity from Quanjiao, Anhui. Born in the 40th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Shengzu era and passing away in the 19th year of the Qianlong reign, he lived to be 54 years old. A child prodigy gifted in memorization, he had a particularly deep knowledge of the Wen Xuan and could compose fu poetry effortlessly. Throughout his life, he produced a large body of poetry, prose, and historical research works, including the twelve-volume Collected Poems and Essays from the Wenmu Mountain Studio, of which four volumes survive today. His satirical novel The Scholars established his distinguished place in the history of Chinese literature, making him one of the greatest novelists of the Qing Dynasty.
