Former Residence of Zhang Yi

The former residence of Zhang Yi is a cultural heritage protection unit in Chuzhou City.

The former residence of Zhang Yi is located at No. 45 Donghou Street, Langya District, Chuzhou City. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty, is categorized as an ancient building, and covers an area of 900 square meters. It is listed as part of the third batch of cultural heritage protection units in Chuzhou City, with the official announcement number Chuzheng [2006] No. 25.

Protected Area: 50 meters to the east and west, and reaching Donghou Street to the south.

Construction Control Zone: 50 meters beyond the protected area to the east, west, and north, and reaching Donghou Street to the south.

Zhang Yi (1901–1986), courtesy name Yousan, was born into a well-off family in Chuzhou and was a renowned educator and psychologist.

Both his grandfather and father were scholars, with his father, Zhang Xinpei, being a selected scholar (Bajiao) in the late Qing Dynasty.

At the age of 16, Zhang Yi went to Shanghai and was admitted to the affiliated high school of St. John's University. He was expelled from the school shortly before graduation for participating in patriotic and anti-imperialist activities. In late May, he returned to his hometown, organized gatherings of overseas students, held demonstrations—distributing leaflets, giving speeches, putting up slogans, and sending telegrams in support of the Beijing student movement.
