The Sui and Tang Grand Canal

The Sui and Tang Grand Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Sui and Tang Grand Canal passes through the provinces of Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu, covering more than 150 kilometers within Anhui. In ancient times, after Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty excavated the Tongji Canal section of the Grand Canal and exited Henan, it passed through Huaibei, Suzhou, and Sixian in Anhui before entering the Huai River at Xuyi in Jiangsu. Most sections of the Sui and Tang Grand Canal in Anhui have silted up over time, with only a few segments still in use today after renovation. Currently, the only “surviving” section of the Sui and Tang Grand Canal is located within our county. It starts from the intersection with the Tanghe River in the west, crosses Sicheng Town, then extends northeast to the Su River, spanning approximately 25 kilometers in total. This section has largely retained the original appearance of the Tongji Canal of the Sui and Tang Grand Canal. Although its original function has changed, it still serves purposes such as irrigation and flood diversion.
