The Liuzi Canal Wharf Site

The Liuzi Canal Wharf Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Liuzi Canal Wharf Site is located in Liuzi Village, Baishan Town, Suixi County, Huaibei City, Anhui Province. Liuzi was originally a town on the Tongji Canal of the Sui and Tang Grand Canal and flourished due to the canal’s opening.

The site has yielded a large number of ceramics from over ten kilns in southern and northern China from the Tang and Song periods, uncovered eight Tang Dynasty shipwrecks (three of which were excavated), and revealed a complete stone-built wharf from the Song Dynasty. The simultaneous discovery of all these items marks the “first” such occurrence in Chinese archaeological history.

The Liuzi Canal Wharf Site holds significant scientific value not only for studying the ceramic lineage and economic and cultural exchanges between northern and southern China during the Tang and Song dynasties but also for canal archaeology, research on the history and route of the Grand Canal, the economic development along the canal, and the study of Yellow River flooding. Protected Area: A zone extending 1000 meters east and west along the canal from the Liuzi stone-built wharf, plus an additional 150 meters outward in all four cardinal directions (east, south, west, north).

Construction Control Zone: A buffer of 100 meters outside the protected area.
