Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve

Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve is a national-level nature reserve.

Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve is situated in Huoshan County, Anhui Province. It lies within the main section of the watershed of the Dabie Mountains' principal peak. The reserve spans a total area of 123 square kilometers, covering the whole of Baojia Township in Yuexi County, Anhui Province. Its main conservation focus includes the typical and representative forest ecosystems of the Dabie Mountain region, as well as nationally rare and endangered wild animals and plants. It also serves as a crucial water conservation forest area for the Mozitan and Foziling reservoirs in the Huai River basin.

The reserve is located in the transitional zone from the northern subtropical to the warm temperate climate belt. Its geographical position—“a transition between north and south, flanked by east and west”—along with its ancient geological history and complex ecological environment, has given rise to uniquely diverse biological resources and natural landscapes. The reserve consists of pristine forests and secondary virgin forests, harboring numerous nationally rare species such as the forest musk deer, Chinese giant salamander, giant salamander, Dabie Mountain five-needle pine, fragrant fruit tree, and many-branched azalea. Yaoluoping was also a renowned revolutionary base area, serving as the site where the former Red 25th Army and Red 28th Army were stationed. Under the leadership of Gao Jingting, they carried out highly effective revolutionary struggles in the Dabie Mountains, pinning down nearly 40 divisions of enemy forces here. The area faces Yingshan County in Hubei Province from afar and is known as the “Red Yaoluoping.”
