Shangtan Bridge

Shangtan Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Shangtan Bridge is located in Shangtan Village, Fangtang Township, Ningguo City, Xuancheng, Anhui Province.

Shangtan Bridge runs from north to south and is a five-arch stone bridge with full shoulders, built from blue stone. Constructed in the 28th year of the Wanli era during the Ming Dynasty (1600), the bridge is 68.9 meters long, with an approach span of 44 meters, and a deck width of 5.6 meters. The five arches span distances from north to south of 12.4 meters, 13.8 meters, 13.8 meters, 12.7 meters, and 12.7 meters respectively. The bridge foundation is built with strip stones, with each layer slightly smaller than the one above. The piers are boat-shaped. On the north side of the fourth arch from the north end, approximately 3.3 meters above the water surface, there is an inscribed stone tablet embedded in the arch, known as the “Tongren Cause and Effect” stele, which records the donors, builders, and the year of construction. The railings are constructed from stone pillars and strip stones. The deck and approach were originally paved with blue stone, with the approach being stair-stepped. In the late 1980s, during the construction of a rural highway, the approach was paved with cement.

Construction control zone: 50 meters north and south of the bridge, and 150 meters east and west, outside the protected area.

Shangtan Village: Located in Fangtang Township, Shangtan Village lies in the western part of Ningguo City, upstream of the beautiful Gangkouwan Reservoir. It borders Hule Town to the south and Yunle Township of Jingde County to the west. The village covers a total area of 45 square kilometers. It administers 20 villager groups, with 513 households and a population of 1,820, including over 60 relocated households (approximately 200 people) and over 30 semi-relocated households (approximately 130 people). The mountainous area spans nearly 70,000 mu, and the paddy field area is 1,563 mu. The village has 70 Party members, 35 villager representatives, and 5 village committee officials. There are 22 households raising Sanhuang chickens, 81 growing edible fungi, and 10 cultivating lingzhi mushrooms.
