Scenery of Luofengwo

The ancestral burial site of Zhang Ying and Zhang Tingyu, father-and-son Grand Secretaries of the Qing Dynasty from Tongcheng, is located in Xizi Lake Town, Tongcheng City, and is named “Luofengwo.” The Zhang family cemetery sits at an elevation of 24 meters, with the gravesite measuring 18 meters in length, 9.5 meters in width, and covering an area of 171 square meters. The main tomb mound rises to a height of 1.1 meters. A tall stele stands upright, protruding 1.07 meters above the ground, with a width of 0.2 meters and a thickness of 0.04 meters. The central part of the stele is inscribed in intaglio with the large characters: “Tomb of Madam Hu, the Fourth Generation Maternal Ancestor of the Zhang Family in the Ming Dynasty,” with the upper inscription reading “Erected by Sun Chun, Provincial Administration Commissioner of Shaanxi,” and the lower inscription stating “Renovated by Zhang Tingyu, Grand Secretary of the Baohe Hall and Tenth Generation Descendant.” The Zhang family cemetery is backed by a majestic mountain, whose shape resembles a phoenix; two nearby mountains stand opposite each other, looking like the phoenix’s wings—hence the name “Luofengwo” (Phoenix Landing Hollow). It faces Songhu Lake, where Songshan Mountain resembles a “pen holder” and the lake itself serves as an “inkstone.” Within the lake, there is one large and one small island, referred to as the “Seal Mounds.” Boats come and go on the lake during the day, while fishing boats dot the night with twinkling lights. As a result, the Zhang family cemetery enjoys the scenic splendor of “a thousand people bowing by day (referring to rowers gesturing with oars)” and “ten thousand bright lamps by night (referring to fishing lights).” Visitors flock here to admire the view.
