Tomb of Shi Congyun

The Tomb of Shi Congyun is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The Tomb of Shi Congyun is located in Jinshen Town, Tongcheng City. The cemetery faces east and covers an area of 480 square meters. The site is square-shaped. The front of the tombstone is inscribed with “Tomb of Martyr Shi Congyun,” the lower part reads “Erected by the People’s Government of Tongcheng County,” and the back features his biography. It is a key cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Shi Congyun (1880–1912), styled Xieqing, was a native of Tongcheng. He graduated from the Baoding Military Preparatory School in 1904. He initially served as an officer and later became a military company commander. During the Wuchang Uprising, when the revolutionary army was besieged by Qing forces, Shi Congyun and others initiated an uprising in Luanzhou to relieve the siege of Wuchang, establishing the “Northern Revolutionary Government.” Shi served as the Commander-in-Chief, Wang Jinming as the Governor, and Feng Yuxiang as the Chief of Staff. The uprising forces were later suppressed by the Qing court, and Shi Congyun was executed at the age of 32. In that year, his remains were transported south by his eldest brother and buried in his hometown. In 1925, the Nationalist Government posthumously awarded him the rank of General. In 1936, upon the request of Feng Yuxiang and others, the Central Committee held a state funeral for the Luanzhou Uprising leaders, erecting a memorial tower and stele. A bronze statue of Shi Congyun was also cast in Beijing’s Zhongshan Park for public veneration.

Shi Congyun (1880–1912), styled Xieqing, was originally from Shijiazui Village, Xiagou, now part of Huigong Town. In his youth, he studied under his elder brother. As a young adult, he joined the 12th Battalion of Wu Changchun’s unit in Tianjin as a guard, and was later selected to attend the Baoding Military Preparatory School. After graduation, he returned to serve as a platoon leader in the 2nd Company of the 20th Battalion of Wu Changchun’s unit, then advanced to become an escort officer stationed in Fengtian. In 1907, while stationed in Xinmin Prefecture in Northeast China, he met Feng Yuxiang, the commander of the 3rd Company of the 80th Battalion of the 1st Mixed Brigade. At the time, the Qing Dynasty was corrupt and incompetent, betraying national sovereignty and arousing public outrage, leading to continuous armed uprisings.
