Joint Tomb of Zhang Ying and His Wife

The joint tomb of Zhang Ying and his wife is a cultural relic protection unit of Anqing City.

The tomb of Zhang Ying is located in "Golden Rooster Land" in Shuangxi Village, Longmian Subdistrict Office. The burial site backs onto Golden Rooster Mountain, faces "Ciji Garden," and is flanked by two small valleys, creating a serene and picturesque environment. Originally, the tomb had an altar and worship platform in front, complete with stone ritual items such as offering tables, candlesticks, and incense burners, along with symmetrical arrangements of stone statues including civil officials, lions, sheep, and horses, all laid out in an orderly fashion. In front of the tomb stands a four-pillar stone memorial archway. Two imperial stelae bestowed in the 48th year of the Kangxi reign and the first year of the Qianlong reign respectively are both mounted on tortoise bases and are placed behind the archway. Yao Nai, a local scholar, wrote a poem about the site: “Amid thousands of emerald peaks, the Dragon’s Rest is encircled in jade; Twin streams meander as if a jade dragon soars. On the round dike, pine whispers blend with mountain pavilions; by the hillside, floral radiance illuminates the stream’s mouth. Green grass now buries the halls of yellow-robed officials; crimson clouds still flutter the white robes of purity. Though aged and frail, I’m fortunate to meet you year after year; yet even in dusk’s dimness, I grudge the early call to leave.”

Zhang Ying (1637–1708), courtesy name Dunfu, art name Puweng, was a native of Tongcheng. He passed the imperial examination in the Dingwei year of the Kangxi reign and rose to the position of Grand Secretary of the Wenhua Hall and Minister of Rites. He successively served as chief editor for the Comprehensive Gazetteer, the Yuanjian Leihan, the Political Precedents and Instructions, and the Strategy for Pacifying the Northern Desert. He authored works such as Collected Essays from the Dusu Hall and Discourses on the Zhouyi. He was posthumously honored with the title Wen Duan, and when the Yongzheng Emperor ascended the throne, he was further granted the title Grand Tutor. Later, he and his wife were buried here. During the Cultural Revolution, the tomb mound was dynamited and the decorative elements destroyed. The tomb of Zhang Ying is a key cultural relic protection unit of Tongcheng City.

Zhang Ying (1637–1708), courtesy name Dunfu, also known as Yuepu and Juanpuweng, was a native of Tongcheng, Anhui Province, and a high-ranking official of the Qing Dynasty. He was the father of Zhang Tingyu. He passed the imperial examination in the sixth year of the Kangxi reign, was selected as a shujishi (imperial scholar), and eventually rose to the rank of Grand Secretary of the Wenhua Hall and Minister of Rites. He also served as chief editor for the compilation of the National History, the Comprehensive Gazetteer, the Yuanjian Leihan, the Political Precedents and Instructions, and the Strategy for Pacifying the Northern Desert. He passed away in the 47th year of the Kangxi reign and was posthumously given the title Wen Duan.
