Feng Yixing Commercial Building

Feng Yixing Commercial Building is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Feng Yixing Commercial Building is located at No. 38, South Street, Jianshe Neighborhood Committee, Wenchang Subdistrict Office, Tongcheng City.

The building faces east and was originally constructed as both a shop and residence by Feng Shibiao, a wealthy merchant who relocated from Jinling to Tongcheng during the Qing Dynasty. It was named “Feng Yixing,” later served as the site of the “Tongcheng Hotel,” and is now inhabited by descendants of the Feng family. The structure consists of three courtyards in a row, all two stories high. The front courtyard has three bays and served as the shop’s main hall, which features a small square inner courtyard with carved wooden windows and a railing around it. The middle courtyard has five bays and uses a post-and-lintel wooden frame. The rear courtyard also has five bays and forms a long inner courtyard with the middle one, containing an ancient well. The wooden handrails and staircases are still intact. Feng Yixing Commercial Building preserves well the architectural characteristics of late Qing Huizhou-style buildings. Its structure is exquisitely designed, simple yet elegant, and it is currently the only complete commercial building remaining in Tongcheng. The surrounding historic architecture is also well preserved, with shops still in existence, contributing to the cohesive traditional streetscape.

Protected area: 5 meters eastward from the exterior wall of buildings on the east side of South Street, and 20 meters outward from the building’s walls to the west, south, and north.

Construction control zone: 5 meters east, 10 meters south, 5 meters west, and 10 meters north beyond the protected area.

Jianshe Community: Jianshe Community is located south of the old city area, bordered by Longmian River to the east, Wenchang Neighborhood Committee to the south, and adjacent to Shengli Community to the northwest. It consists of 6 resident groups and 34 residential zones, with a total of 3,561 households and a population of 12,365. The community Party general branch includes two branches and currently has 192 Party members. The area houses schools, hospitals, enterprises, institutions, and numerous businesses. The community enjoys a harmonious and peaceful residential environment.
