Yujia Mountain Site

The Yujia Mountain Site is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The prehistoric settlement site of Yujia Mountain in Yuhang, Zhejiang, is located in Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The site features the first discovery of a complete settlement composed of six ring ditches, which for the first time revealed a basic social unit of the Liangzhu culture. The six ring ditches are believed to represent six related clans. Furthermore, differences in their size, distribution, and burial hierarchy also indicate varying social statuses among them. The excavation of the Yujia Mountain Site has provided new materials and perspectives for studying the social organizational structure of the Liangzhu culture, and it was named one of the “Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries of China in 2011.”

The prehistoric settlement site of Yujia Mountain in Yuhang, Zhejiang, is located in the Yuhang Economic Development Zone, more than 20 kilometers west of the Liangzhu Ancient City. To the south is the Maoshan Site, where rice fields of the Liangzhu culture were discovered for the first time, and to the southwest is the Hengshan Site, where high-ranking noble burials were found. From October 2008 to April 2012, the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the China Jiangnan Water Town Culture Museum jointly conducted drilling and excavation at the Yujia Mountain Site. The total area of the site was found to be approximately 150,000 square meters, with about 18,000 square meters already excavated. After more than three years of exploration, excavation, and research, it was confirmed that the Yujia Mountain Site consists of six adjacent ring ditches, containing Neolithic settlement remains such as artificially piled-up earthen platforms, residential areas, plazas, and cemeteries. Within approximately 20 square kilometers around the site, over 20 Liangzhu culture sites have been identified through surveys and excavations, indicating the presence of a large-scale, high-level Liangzhu cultural center settlement area in the western and northern parts of Linping Mountain, second only to the Liangzhu Ancient City region. As of April 2012, nearly 400 tombs dating from the Songze culture to the late Liangzhu culture had been excavated, yielding more than 4,000 funerary objects (in sets).

Yuhang Economic Development Zone (Donghu Subdistrict): Donghu Subdistrict was established on August 20, 2001, after the town was abolished. It governs 9 villages (with Hongfeng and Hengtang villages under the management of the development zone), 63 villager groups, 6 communities, and has a total population of 33,437, including 28,418 non-agricultural residents, covering an area of 14.3 square kilometers.

Donghu Subdistrict is located in the Linping urban area of Yuhang, Yuhang District, with a superior geographical location and well-developed infrastructure. It borders Xucun Town of Haining City to the east, connects to Linping Subdistrict to the west, and faces Yunhe Town to the north. The Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway and National Highway 320 run through the area. The Yuhang Economic Development Zone is situated in Donghu Subdistrict.
