Introduction

The Yangshan Scenic Area is located in the western part of Shengsi Archipelago, consisting of 83 islets and reefs, mostly bare rocks and rugged stones. Due to its uneven terrain, it is also known as the Qiqu (Rugged) Islands National Scenic Area. The scenic area includes Dayangshan Island, Xiaoyangshan Island, and Shenjiawan Island, among others. It is characterized by its fantastic rocks, spiritual reefs, and cliff inscriptions.

Rocks hide like tigers in the shadows, roots twist like dragons lying down. The scenic area is covered with exposed rocks and bizarre reefs, and features numerous cliff inscriptions, including those from the Ming and Qing dynasties such as “Vast Sea and Open Sky,” “Calm Sea Waves,” “Pillar in the Midst of the Current,” “Clear Expanse of the Sea,” “Gathering of the Wise,” “Where the Roc Transforms,” “Ten Thousand Acres of Clear Waves,” and “Leaning Sword.”

The cliff inscriptions feature bold strokes and dynamic brushwork, offering a feast for the eyes. Among them, the “Leaning Sword” inscription is particularly magnificent, with characters measuring four meters square. In the Shenggu Cliff Inscription Group, the phrase “Gathering of the Wise,” inscribed in the 14th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty by Lei Yuchun and others from Tingtan, is especially precious.

On Xiaoyang Island lies the “Xiaoyang Stone Dragon,” resembling two dragons lying side by side, stretching over a hundred meters, winding across the sky with majestic momentum, and is considered yet another natural wonder of the Shengsi Archipelago.

On Da’mei Mountain, there is a crevice formed by stacked granite spheres, extending from the mountain peak down to sea level, known as the “Sky-Connecting Cave” or “Sea-Connecting Cave.” After rain and under clear skies, the view of the Da’mei rock formations from afar resembles an ink landscape painting by the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, captivating and enchanting all who see it.

Additionally, visitors to the Yangshan Scenic Area can admire unique sights such as the “Sister Rocks,” “Fairy Cave,” “Stone Rooster Gazing at the Sky,” and “Camel Rock Questioning the Heavens,” which evoke the verses of Wang Zhenbai: “Waves and winds beat as if to shatter, caves in cliffs lie deep in stillness, moss dots shine bright green, crickets hide and chirp at dawn.”
