Dayangshan is the seat of the government of Yangshan Town in Shengsi County, facing Xiaoyangshan across the sea. It lies 39.6 kilometers northeast of the county town, Caiyuan Town, and 35 kilometers northwest of Luchaogang in Nanhui County, Shanghai.

The island is propeller-shaped and stretches from east to west, measuring 4 kilometers in length, 1.3 kilometers wide at the southern end, and 200–300 meters wide at the northern end. It has a land area of 4.19 square kilometers and a coastline of 16.7 kilometers. Surrounded by mountains, the island features a relatively open valley in the middle, with the highest peak, Dashan, rising 204 meters above sea level.

The scenery of Dayangshan is known for its peculiar rocks, grotesque stones, and cliff inscriptions. There is a crevice cave formed by granite layers called Daotian Cave, which extends upward to the mountain peak and downward to the sea, making it quite unique. Xiaomeishan features stone carvings such as “Seas Calm as Silk.” Additionally, there is the Qing Dynasty Tianhou Palace, which is a county-level cultural relic.

In 2005, the Yangshan Deep-Water Port of the Shanghai International Shipping Center was established within the Dayangshan scenic area. The deep-water port rises from the East China Sea, and viewing its majestic presence from the island has become another highlight of visiting Dayangshan.

Background: In the early days of development, most residents of Dayangshan migrated from places such as Ningbo, Jintang, and Daishan, mainly engaging in fishing. Historically, Dayangshan served as the gateway between Jiangsu and Zhejiang and was a strategic coastal defense location. During the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty, the court established the Sangu Patrol Inspectorate on Dayangshan. The Song Dynasty's Baoliang-era "Siming Annals" records: “The Sangu Patrol Inspectorate is stationed on Sangu Mountain, 800 li northwest of the county.” During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it remained a rendezvous point for the Zhejiang naval forces.
