There are many inns available for lodging in Shengshan Town, with prices

ranging from 20 to 50 yuan. It is recommended to stay in Qianwei Village, where the East Cliff Precipice is located, as it is the easternmost part of Shengshan Island. From there, you can gaze out at the sea and watch the sun rise above the horizon—a truly spectacular sight. However, there are no inns in the village itself. At the drop-off point for the tricycle, there is a grocery store where you can inquire about lodging from the shop owner, and arrangements can usually be made.

As soon as you step onto Shengshan Dock, you’ll find yourself in a bustling market. From time to time, fishermen return from sea carrying baskets loaded with large, plump crabs. Small vendors display all kinds of seafood in plastic basins of various sizes—such as Buddha’s hands, prawns, and sea eels—fresh and incredibly affordable, so don’t miss out.

Introduction

Located at the easternmost tip of Shengshan Island and also the easternmost point of the Zhoushan Archipelago, the East Cliff Precipice rises dozens of meters high, stretches for several kilometers, and extends directly into the sea. The raging waves crash against the cliffs, sending up “thousands of piles of snow.” Among the formations is the Yuanbao Stone, which features uniquely whimsical shapes and is highly entertaining to observe. The scenic area also boasts numerous cliff inscriptions dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, characterized by bold and powerful brushwork. These were created by historical figures such as Ming Dynasty Regional Commander Hou Jigao, Military Supervisor Zhang WenZhi, and General Chen Mengdou. To reach the East Cliff Precipice from Shengshan Town, you can take a tricycle for about 10 yuan. Pass through Shengshan Town and go through the tunnel to get there. Alternatively, walk along the seawall; at the end of the road is Qianwei Village. Start your hike from there, following the path through the fishing village, which takes approximately 30–45 minutes to reach the East Cliff Precipice.

Transportation

Shengshan is a major fishing port and market hub for the entire Zhoushan Fishing Ground. Shengshan Island is the largest island at the eastern end of the Zhoushan Archipelago, facing Gouqi Island across the sea, with frequent ferry services between the two.

Departing from Sijiao Island, the boarding point is at Xiaocaiyuan Dock in Caiyuan Town (Location: Wulong Township, at the foot of Dabeishan Mountain)

1. “Shengxiang No. 2” (Full fare: 46 yuan): Departs at 7:40 AM. On odd-numbered days, it makes stops at Lvhua Island, Huaniao Island, and Gouqi Island en route, allowing passengers to disembark or board at those islands, arriving at Shengshan Island around 11:30 AM. On even-numbered days, the ferry does not stop at other islands and goes directly to Shengshan. After arriving, the “Shengxiang No. 2” returns the same way, reaching Xiaocaiyuan Dock around 3:00 PM.

2. Speedboat “Maosheng No. 6” (Fare: 62 yuan): Departs at 3:30 PM, arriving directly at Shengshan Island about one hour later. It then returns to Xiaocaiyuan Dock around 4:45 PM on the same day.
