Beiao Mazu Temple

Beiao Mazu Temple is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.

Located in Dongsha Village, Beiao Town. Mazu, whose given name was Lin Moniang, was born in 960 AD in Meizhou Island, Putian County, Fujian Province, during the first year of the Jianlong era under Emperor Taizu of the Song Dynasty. She often rescued fishermen in distress and was deeply revered by coastal communities. After her passing, a temple was erected in her honor. She was later posthumously honored with the titles "Heavenly Consort" and "Heavenly Empress." This building was constructed during the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era (1736–1795), and underwent renovations during the Daoguang, Xianfeng, and Guangxu eras. In 1929, villager Chen Jiniu initiated further repairs, adding an entrance hall and two side wings. Covering an area of over 400 square meters, the temple faces south and consists of an entrance hall, theater stage, two side wings, an altar pavilion, and a main hall. It has three sections in depth, five bays in width, with a total depth of 35.8 meters and a width of 11.20 meters, featuring a flush-gable roof. Though modest in scale, the Mazu Temple features exquisite structure and solemn decorations, making it one of the better-preserved Mazu temple buildings in the province.

Throughout his life, he was dedicated to self-study and rigorous academic pursuit; he committed himself to the study of the “Four Branches” of classical literature—classics, history, philosophy, and literature; he promoted the development of traditional Chinese scholarship and the cultivation of talent; and he was filled with patriotism and national pride. He served as head of the History Department at both Peking University and the Central University, and was a historian, educator, eminent scholar, and master of Chinese classics.
