Commemorative Monument for the Founding of Zhejiang Southern Weekly (Kuocang Edition)

In May 1947, the official newspaper of the CPC Zhejiang Southern Special Committee, Current Affairs Weekly, was launched. In October of the same year, to adapt to the needs of the struggle in the Oujiang North region, the CPC Yueqing Central County Committee decided to establish the Oujiang North edition of Current Affairs Weekly, with Ma Ling serving as the editor. Shortly after the launch of Current Affairs Weekly (Oujiang North Edition), it was suspended due to the tense situation, resumed publication in January 1948, and Jin Shirong took over as editor in February. In October of the same year, the newspaper was renamed Zhejiang Southern Weekly (Kuocang Edition) and began publication in Zhongbao Village, Lingtou Township, Yongjia. By April 1949, a total of 61 issues of Zhejiang Southern Weekly had been published. In its early days, the newspaper mainly reprinted news from the Xinhua News Agency in the liberated areas, but later gradually expanded to include sections such as commentary, wartime news, news from Chiang-controlled areas, national defense news, local news, and new democracy. The number of pages also increased from the original two pages per issue (approximately 4,300 characters) to four pages (or six pages) per issue (approximately 11,200 characters). For major news, special editions or bulletins were issued. From its inception, Zhejiang Southern Weekly (Kuocang Edition) worked in tandem with Zhejiang Southern Weekly (the predecessor of Wenzhou Daily) to contribute to the revolutionary struggle in the Zhejiang Southern region.

The Commemorative Monument for the Founding of Zhejiang Southern Weekly (Kuocang Edition) is located in Zhongbao Village, Lingtou Township, Yongjia County. It was funded and built by Wenzhou Daily on May 1, 1997. The monument is approximately 3 meters high and 7 meters wide, constructed from granite, with a front panel inlaid with white polished marble engraved with the four large characters “Zhejiang Southern Weekly,” resembling an open newspaper page; the back panel is inlaid with bluish-green polished granite, engraved with the inscription on the founding of the Zhejiang Southern Weekly (Kuocang Edition) Commemorative Monument.

The Commemorative Monument for the Founding of Zhejiang Southern Weekly (Kuocang Edition) serves as a base for local youth to engage in patriotic education.
