Former Residence of Xia Chao

The former residence of Xia Chao is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.

The former residence of Xia Chao is located in Wanfu Township, Qingtian County, dating back to the Republican era.

On April 19, 2003, the Xia Chao Former Residence in Xinzhuang Village, Wanfu (built in 1924) was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site by the Qingtian County People's Government.

On January 7, 2011, it was listed as part of the sixth batch of Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Sites.

Xia Chao (1882–1926) was the first Governor of Zhejiang Province during the Republican era, a Major General, posthumously promoted to General, and a military commander. His courtesy name was Dinghou, and his childhood name was Shouzhen. He was a native of Xinzhuang, Wanfu, Jiudu, Qingtian. Both his grandfather and father, Xia Gongjiu, were scholars who made a living as private tutors.

Xia Chao was extremely intelligent in his childhood. He studied the classics and history with his father and had an exceptional memory, often mastering texts after a single reading. However, he failed the imperial civil service examination for youths. In the 29th year of the Guangxu reign (1903), he was admitted to the fourth cohort of the Zhejiang Military Preparatory School. Wanfu Township: Located southwest of the county seat, at the border between Qingtian and WenCheng counties, Wanfu Township is bordered by Fushan Township to the east, WenCheng County to the south, Linggen Township to the west, and Beishan Town to the north. During the Qing Dynasty, this area belonged to Jiudu. Before 1948, it was merged with the neighboring Shiyuan Township to form Wanyuan Township. Before liberation, it was called Wanfu Township, named after the village where the township government was located. After the liberation in 1949, Wanfu and Puzhou townships were established. In 1956, the two townships were merged and still called Wanfu Township. In 1958, it was restructured as the Wanfu Management Area, and in 1961, adjusted to the Wanfu People’s Commune.
