Former Residence of Hua Gang

The Former Residence of Hua Gang is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

In Miaoxia Village, Miaoxia Township, Longyou, the village in front is called Jingling Temple, and the one at the back is called Shangcun Dian. Both "Temple" and "Dian" are related to temples, so the village situated in between was named Miaoxia. With mountains in sight above and water below, Miaoxia is a village where landscape and water are intertwined. Nestled within the valley formed by the convergence of Xishan Ridge and Shanzhaiping, three creeks of varying sizes—Xiaokai, Zhongyang Kai (in the local dialect, "Kai" means a small stream), and Tuoxi—run through the township in a pattern resembling the Chinese character "川". Endless stretches of graceful bamboo sway under the boundless blue sky, resembling an ocean of green. When the breeze passes, the bamboo tops sway gently, creating rippling waves and undulating green sways—a scene full of lush beauty. Such picturesque landscapes have also nurtured many notable figures, among them Hua Gang.

In Miaoxia Village, Miaoxia Township, Longyou, tucked away within winding alleys, there is an unassuming old-style residence at No. 49 Xiajie—this is the former residence of Hua Gang, a key cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province. Hua Gang, whose genealogical name was Hua Yannian and who was also known as Hua Shaofeng and Hua Xiayuan, was born on June 9, 1903, in Yan Village, Miaoxia Township, Longyou County, Zhejiang Province. For his primary school education, his father purchased a house in what is now Miaoxia Village—the existing former residence. He was an early professional revolutionary, philosopher, historian, and educator of the Chinese Communist Party.

The residence is where Hua Gang lived and studied during his youth. It is a building with architectural styles from the Ming Dynasty. The structure faces west and is situated eastward, featuring three sections and three bays, with a width of 11.45 meters and a total depth of 24.85 meters, covering an area of 285 square meters. The gate tower features brick carvings with two pillars and one floor, complete with architraves and bracket arms. The main hall’s central bay has five rafters with single-step extensions both front and rear, supported by four pillars, while the side bays use five pillars with through-tenon construction. The materials used are robust and the craftsmanship exquisite. The roof is covered with tiles, and there are various carvings and decorations. Extended Reading:
