Changxing Limestone Nature Reserve

The Changxing Limestone Nature Reserve is located 21 kilometers northwest of Changxing County, at the foot of Qingtang Mountain, about 2 kilometers northeast of Huaihua. It currently belongs to Baoqing Village in Huaikan Township.

Since the 1930s, many geologists from both domestic and international backgrounds have explored the region from Daodui Mountain in Meishan, Changxing, to Qingtang Mountain in Huaikan. They have successively discovered new species of nautilus fossils and rare fish fossils found nowhere else in the world. The discovery of these precious fossils proves that while the Late Permian strata in other parts of the world had ceased development, those in Changxing (dating back approximately 230 million years) were still forming. The Changxing Meishan section of China’s strata represents the highest stratigraphic level of the global Late Permian period and is also the most complete of its kind in the world, containing a rich diversity of fossils from multiple categories. In the 20th year of the Republic of China (1931), it was recognized by many international geologists as an international stratigraphic standard profile, also known as the Changxing Formation Type Section. In March 1981, the “Changxing Limestone” was designated as a key protected area by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. In May 1982, officials from the Provincial Construction Commission, Cultural Relics Management Committee, Museum, and local government jointly surveyed and defined the reserve boundaries, erecting a permanent bilingual (Chinese and English) marker. In recent years, scholars from Canada, the United States, Japan, and other countries have visited the site for research multiple times. Domestic scholars and university students studying geology have also come here for field study and research.
