Taicang Nanyuan (Prime Minister’s Mansion)

Taicang Nanyuan (Prime Minister’s Mansion) is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Nanyuan was originally a place where Wang Xijue, the Chief Grand Secretary during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, enjoyed viewing plum blossoms and planting chrysanthemums. It originally covered an area of 18 mu. In the early Qing Dynasty, Wang Shimin, a painter and grandson of the virtuous minister Wen Su, expanded the garden. He specially invited Zhang Nanyuan, the master landscape architect of the time, to oversee its construction. With a painter and a master craftsman—two experts collaborating—the garden became a historic masterpiece where garden design and painting art were seamlessly integrated. Since the Qing Dynasty, it has been the foremost garden in our region, but was later destroyed in war.

Starting in 1998, with the support of the municipal government, the site was redesigned and planned based on original photographs and blueprints. Historic buildings of value from the old city renovation project were relocated to Nanyuan. After six years of restoration, original attractions such as the “Gate Tower,” “Xiuxue Hall,” “Xiangtao Pavilion,” “Da Huan Pavilion,” “Crane and Plum Immortal Hall,” “Cold Green Boat,” “Tan Ying Pavilion,” “Long Corridor,” and bridge pavilions were gradually restored.
