The Song Wenzhi Art Museum (Former Residence of Song Wenzhi) is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

Song Wenzhi Art Museum

The Song Wenzhi Art Museum was built in 1989 and is located at No. 12, Xianfu East Street, Taicang City. The museum houses 60 representative works by Mr. Song Wenzhi from the 1940s to the 1980s, over 30 precious paintings and calligraphies from the Ming and Qing dynasties in his collection, as well as 30 ancient painted pottery pieces of high value. Song Wenzhi was from the western suburbs of Taicang. He studied under renowned painters Zhang Shiyuan and Wu Hufan. He served successively as a council member of the China Artists Association, vice chairman of the Jiangsu Artists Association, standing committee member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, deputy director of the Jiangsu Painting and Calligraphy Academy, and professor at Nanjing University.

At the end of 1989, the Taicang Municipal People's Government specially allocated funds to build the Song Wenzhi Art Museum. It is one of China’s art museums dedicated to renowned ink painting masters. In addition to housing representative works donated by Mr. Song Wenzhi during his lifetime, including Ming and Qing paintings and calligraphies and excavated cultural relics, the museum also collects many outstanding works by contemporary ink painting masters.

It was listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province in 2011.

Current Condition:

The former residence of Song Wenzhi now serves as the Song Wenzhi Art Museum, displaying representative works donated by Mr. Song Wenzhi during his lifetime, along with precious paintings and calligraphies from the Ming and Qing dynasties and excavated cultural relics.

In December 2011, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government announced it as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units.

Song Wenzhi (1919–1999) was a modern painter from Taicang, Jiangsu. In his early years, he apprenticed at a Shanghai advertising agency and studied at the Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute. Later, he worked as an art teacher at primary and secondary schools and normal schools.

In 1957, he became an associate painter at the Jiangsu Provincial Chinese Painting Academy and later served as its deputy director. During his lifetime, he was a council member of the China Artists Association, vice chairman of the Jiangsu Branch of the China Artists Association, professor at Nanjing University, vice president of the Provincial International Cultural Exchange Center, and standing committee member of the Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
