Liuhe Zhu Qizhan Memorial Hall

The Zhu Qizhan Memorial Hall is located in Liuhe Park, Taicang. It was the painting studio where the renowned centenarian master of traditional Chinese painting, Mr. Zhu Qizhan, practiced his art in his youth. Built before the Anti-Japanese War, the thatched cottage attracted numerous celebrities after its completion. More than ten artists, including Qi Baishi, Shen Yinmo, Huang Binhong, and Pan Tianshou, composed poems and created paintings for the "Plum Blossom Cottage."

The memorial hall dedicated to the contemporary master of traditional Chinese painting, Zhu Qizhan, opened on May 23, 2011. Mr. Zhu Qizhan was a highly celebrated centenarian master of painting, and the "Plum Blossom Cottage" was the name of the painting studio in his former residence. The newly built memorial hall, with a total investment of 3 million yuan, has been expanded from the original "one courtyard and one entrance" to "three courtyards and two entrances," featuring an exhibition hall displaying works by Zhu Qizhan.

The memorial hall covers an area of 3,600 square meters, with a construction area of 600 square meters. The front hall serves as a reception and office area for guests, the middle hall functions as a multifunctional exhibition space showcasing calligraphy and paintings by notable figures, and the rear hall is the Plum Blossom Cottage—the study where Mr. Zhu Qizhan painted in his early years.

Zhu Qizhan (1892–1996) was born on the second day of the fifth month of the 18th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty, in Xin Town, Liuhe, Taicang, Jiangsu Province, into a wealthy merchant family. His given name was Zengjun, and he used the courtesy names Qizai and Erzhan Laomin. His studio names included Plum Blossom Cottage, Pisi Ju, Yangchangpu Shi, and Xiuzhu Wulu. His grandfather, Changyi Gong, styled Xiangzhou, was a merchant known for his Confucian virtues, quiet temperament, and philanthropy, having established the Jishan Tang and the Seven Righteousness Shrines, performing many good deeds in the local community. His father, Zhu Dakun, carried on the family business by running a soy sauce workshop and was also known for his generosity throughout his life. His mother, Lady Shi, was the daughter of Shi Lianshi, a Confucian scholar and merchant from Liuhe Town.
