Shuangfeng Jade Emperor Pavilion in Taicang

The Jade Emperor Pavilion is located on Fenglin Road in Shuangfeng Town. Originally named Shenxiao Wanling Pavilion, it was first built in the 22nd year of the Zhiyuan era during the Yuan Dynasty (1285), established by Zhou Jingqing, a native of Shuangfeng and a disciple of Zhang Yucai, the 38th Celestial Master and the officially recognized leader of the Zhengyi Dao sect under the Yuan Dynasty. The pavilion is locally known for the saying “of the two and a half in the whole country, Shuangfeng alone has one,” and there are also legends that Emperor Jianwen of the Ming Dynasty once took refuge here, which contributed to its fame throughout southern Jiangsu.

Since opening to the public in 1994, the pavilion has seen an increasing flow of worshippers. During festivals, temple fairs, especially on New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year, and the ninth day of the first lunar month, tens of thousands of devotees from Shuangfeng Town as well as nearby areas such as Changshu, Kunshan, and even Shanghai come to pay their respects. Coupled with folk performances such as dragon lantern dances, rolling lantern shows, and lion dances, the atmosphere is exceptionally lively.

Public Transport: Take bus routes 111, 310, or 329 within Taicang City and get off at Shuangfeng Fudi Station.

Driving Directions: Shanghai–Yixing Highway → Fenglin Road, Shuangfeng Town, 204 National Road; or exit at Shuangfeng from the Suzhou–Kunshan–Taicang Expressway → head south along 204 National Road to Fenglin Road, Shuangfeng Town.
