Taicang Tongjue Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Tongjue Temple is located on Nanhuang Road in Fuqiao Town, Taicang City. Originally built during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, the temple boasts a history of nearly six hundred years. Legend has it that Emperor Jianwen once took refuge here and planted a ginkgo tree (which still stands in Tongjue Temple Park). The name “Tongjue Temple” was also given by Emperor Jianwen, inspired by his grandfather Zhu Yuanzhang’s monastic name from the “Huangjue Temple” where he once lived, as the Ming Dynasty’s founding emperor Zhu Yuanzhang rose to power from a monk’s status. Similarly, Emperor Jianwen subtly conveyed his hope to reclaim imperial rule through monastic life.

Over the dynasties, Tongjue Temple has enjoyed flourishing incense offerings. The sacred statue of Guanyin enshrined within the temple is said to frequently display miraculous signs, drawing devout worshippers from all directions. Visitors who come with prayers often report their wishes being fulfilled, making the temple widely renowned.

Tongjue Temple covers an area of 63 acres. It consists of the Mountain Gate, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Heavenly King Hall, Great Mercy Pavilion, Ten Thousand Buddhas Building, Scripture Depository, Mahavira Hall, Pagoda, and other halls. The temple buildings are grand in scale and solemn in appearance. The 66-meter-tall pagoda stands majestically and shines brilliantly. The serene and elegant Tongjue Temple Park features winding railings, corridors, ponds, and pavilions, complementing the temple and pagoda. It has become a integrated complex of monastery and garden, and also serves as a Buddhist sacred site and tourist attraction in the port area.

Transportation by Bus: Take bus routes 203, 209, 213, 302, etc. within Taicang City and get off at Tongjue Temple Stop.

Driving Directions: Enter Taicang via Hutai Road – take the Shanghai-Fuhuanghai First-Class Highway – go straight east along Nanhuang Road; or exit at Shuangfeng on the Sujiaotai Expressway – go south on National Highway 204 to Xingang Road, turn left and go straight – turn left onto Shanghai-Fuhuanghai First-Class Highway and go straight – turn right onto Nanhuang Road and go straight east.
