Mufu Mountain in Nanjing

Mufu Mountain in Nanjing is situated along the Yangtze River to the northwest of Nanjing. The mountain range stretches undulatingly from Shangyuan Gate in the west to Yanziji in the east, spanning approximately 12 li. Mufu Mountain features five peaks, with the main peak known as Beigu Peak, standing over 70 zhang high and housing deep rocky caves beneath it. The middle peak boasts scenic spots such as Immortal Cave and Tiger Running Spring; the two peaks in the northwest are collectively called Jialuo Peak, also commonly known as “Jiazhou Peak.”

To the east of Mufu Mountain, along the river, lies a limestone ridge. During the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, a Guanyin Pavilion was built beside the mountain, hence the name Guanyin Mountain. By the time of Emperor Yingzong of Ming, a temple was constructed next to the pavilion and named Hongji Temple, which later merged with Yongji Temple to become one of Nanjing’s major ancient temples. Upon entering the temple gate, one immediately sees a hall nestled within the mountain, about one zhang deep, hollow inside with no bottom, featuring wooden shrines. The front column holds a stone stele engraved with a painting of Guanyin by Wu Daozi.

Due to the passage of time, the temple has become dilapidated, but the Guanyin Pavilion still stands tall by the river, as if poised to plunge downward. Looking out through the windows, you can see vast flatlands, boundless river surfaces, and mountains. The site features the wonder of “12 Rock Terraces and Caves,” among which the more renowned caves are the First, Second, and Third Terrace Caves. The cave rocks are uniquely shaped—the stone dragons, stone beasts, and other formations appear both still and dynamic, remarkably lifelike. To the east of the First Terrace Cave lies Yanziji. Climbing Mufu Mountain is one of the Forty-Eight Scenic Spots of Jinling. Strolling along the northern side of Mufu Mountain by the river and looking up at the rugged cliffs, one can spot exquisite karst wonders everywhere. The lush pines and green grass dotting the caves and cliffs exude a vibrant vitality, offering great inspiration.

Ticket Information

The ticket price is 30 yuan per person, while the annual card costs 50 yuan each. A combined ticket for the Guanyin Scenic Area and Yanziji Park is priced at 35 yuan per person, and this combined ticket must be sold together with individual attraction tickets for visitors to choose from.
