Former site of Jardine Matheson & Co.

The former site of Jardine Matheson & Co. is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

Jardine Matheson & Co. was established in 1913 by the British Weston brothers and was located at No. 168 Baotaqiao West Street, Gulou District, Nanjing. It now serves as the factory premises of Nanjing Tianhuan Food (Group) Co., Ltd. In 1925, after the May 30th Incident in Shanghai, the party and youth league organizations in Nanjing mobilized the workers of the foreign firm to launch a strike that shocked the world — lasting 42 days — in support of the anti-imperialist patriotic struggle. In February 1927, a Party branch was established at Jardine Matheson & Co., with Deng Dinghai, a member of the Nanjing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, serving as branch secretary. The site became an important location for underground activities organized by the CCP in Nanjing. After the fall of Nanjing in 1937, the company was forced to cease operations.
