Former Residence of Shao Lizi

The former residence of Shao Lizi, a renowned patriotic figure and veteran leader of the Kuomintang, and his wife Fu Xuewen, is located on a small hill at No. 27 Jian’ge Road. Covering an area of over 400 square meters, it is a two-story Western-style building facing south, with a brick-concrete structure. There are six rooms in total, both upstairs and downstairs, with a construction area of approximately 240 square meters. The upper floor has a terrace, and the lower floor has a veranda. The interior features solid wood flooring, steel doors, and steel windows. Inside the former residence, the elderly couple, Shao Lizi and Fu Xuewen, personally funded the establishment of the Lixue Primary School on a site covering 5,129 square meters to support the education of underprivileged children. After the liberation of Nanjing, they donated the school to the people of Nanjing.

Their personal residence has endured 60 years of weathering, yet its exterior remains largely unchanged. Today, it is mainly inhabited by Shao Lizi’s grandnephew and grandniece.

The building was constructed in 1935 (the 24th year of the Republic of China), with a total floor area of 700 square meters. It is a three-story Western-style building (with partial third floor), facing north-south, featuring a brick-concrete structure, steel doors and windows, and gray brick walls with exposed mortar.

Shao Lizi (1882–1967) was from Shaojia’lan Village (now Shaoyan Town), Tao’ai Township, Shaoxing. His original name was Jingkui, and his courtesy name was Zhonghui (meaning “Kui and Bi Shine Together”). When he entered school, he changed his name to Wentai. While working for the Minli Newspaper, he used the pen name “Lizi.” He initially studied the Analects of Confucius and the Book of Songs. Between the ages of 11 and 15, he studied at home and finished reading local chronicles of Shaoxing such as the Kangxi Shaoxing County Annals, the Jiaqing Shanyin County Annals, the Daoguang Shaoxing County Annals, the Shaoxing Prefecture Annals, the Biographies of Shaoxing’s Ancient Sages, and the Biographical Records of Shaoxing’s Later Sages.
