Nanjing Bazishan Park

The construction of Bazishan Park aims to explore and showcase Nanjing’s rich historical and cultural resources, while complementing the landscape development of the Inner Qinhuai River Scenic Belt. Covering an area of approximately 8.5 hectares, the park stretches from Zhongshan North Road in the north to the Air Force Yin Yan Garment Factory in the south, and from the Ming city wall in the west to Longchi’an Road in the east. The park has 20,000 square meters of green space open to the public for free. It is also connected with Xiaotaoyuan Scenic Area and Xiuqiu Park, forming a group of “sister attractions.”

Bazishan Mountain was historically known as Siwangshan (Lookout Mountain). According to local chronicles in Nanjing: “The Great King of Wu once ascended this mountain with the immortal Ge Yuan (also known as Ge Xuan), where the steep terrain offered a sweeping view — hence the name ‘Siwang’ (Four Lookouts).” In 1929, to welcome the funeral procession of Sun Yat-sen passing along Zhongshan North Road, the then Nationalist Government built eight large characters on the mountainside with stones: “Loyalty, Filial Piety, Benevolence, Love, Trustworthiness, Righteousness, Peace” — from which the mountain got its new name, “Bazishan” (Eight Characters Mountain). In the early years of liberation, the Communist government changed the characters to the traditional Chinese phrase “Develop Production, Prosper Economy.” During the Cultural Revolution, the eight characters were altered once again to “Unity, Tension, Seriousness, Liveliness.”

In 2004, Bazishan Park was completed, comprising nine major scenic areas including Xiangshan Square, Banshan Stream, Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Siwang Pavilion, and Mountain Eco-Garden. Among them, the Siwang Pavilion area is the core of the park, located at the main peak of Bazishan. The area features a two-story pavilion building styled after the Ming and Qing dynasties, with upturned eaves that echo the nearby Yuejiang Tower. From its heights, visitors can gaze at Yuejiang Tower in the distance and overlook Xiuqiu Park, Xiaotaoyuan, and Yijiang Gate, making it a true urban forest.
