Hohai University

Hohai University is a century-old national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is characterized by water conservancy, primarily focused on engineering disciplines, and features a well-coordinated development across multiple disciplines. The university is part of China’s “211 Project,” a national platform for innovation in key disciplines, and has a graduate school. Over the past hundred years, the university has grown and thrived through its dedication to water management and national development, earning the reputation as the “cradle for high-level innovative and entrepreneurial talent in water conservancy and an important base for water science and technology innovation.” The university has campuses in Nanjing and Changzhou, including the Xikang Road Campus, Jiangning Campus, and Changzhou Campus, covering a total area of 2,579 acres.

Hohai University originated from the Hohai Engineering School, founded in 1915 by the renowned modern educator and industrialist Zhang Jian. It was China’s first higher education institution dedicated to training water conservancy professionals, pioneering the field of water conservancy higher education in the country. Proletarian revolutionaries such as Zhang Wentian and Shen Zemin studied at Hohai and embarked on their revolutionary paths from here. In 1924, it merged with the engineering department of Southeast University to form the Hohai College of Engineering. In 1927, it was incorporated into the Fourth Zhongshan University, which was later renamed National Central University and then Nanjing University. In 1952, the water conservancy departments of Nanjing University, Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, and other institutions, along with the East China Water Conservancy College, were combined to establish the East China College of Hydraulic Engineering, with Qian Zhengying as its first president. In 1960, the university was designated as a national key university by the CPC Central Committee. In 1985, it resumed its traditional name, “Hohai University,” with the university name personally inscribed by Deng Xiaoping.

Hohai University comprises specialized colleges and departments, including the College of Hydrology and Water Resources, College of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, College of Harbor, Coastal and Offshore Engineering, College of Civil and Transportation Engineering, College of Environment, College of Energy and Electrical Engineering, College of Computer and Information, College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, College of Internet of Things Engineering, College of Mechanics and Materials, College of Earth Sciences and Engineering, College of Marine Sciences, College of Science, College of Business, College of Business Administration, College of Public Administration, College of Law, College of Marxism, College of Foreign Languages, Department of Physical Education, as well as special programs such as the Da Yu Honors College (for top-tier talent cultivation), International Education College, and College of Distance and Continuing Education. As of the end of 2016, the university had a total of 51,272 students enrolled in various degree programs, including 16,439 graduate students, 19,853 undergraduate students, 14,242 adult education students, and 738 international students.
