Former Residence of Liu Xianzhou

The former residence of Liu Xianzhou is located at No. 32-2, Gaoyunling.

Liu Xianzhou, originally named He and styled Xianzhou, was born on January 27, 1890, in Wan County, Hebei Province. In 1908, he joined the Tongmenghui and participated in the Xinhai Revolution. Determined to pursue the path of "saving the country through science" and "saving the country through education," he once served as an instructor at the Advanced Vocational Preparatory Class for Work-Study Programs in France. Liu Shaoqi, Li Fuchun, and Li Weihan were all students of this preparatory class. In 1924, he served as the president of Peiyang University in Tianjin. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he became the first vice president of Tsinghua University. In 1955, he joined the Communist Party of China, becoming one of the earliest renowned professors to do so after the liberation, and he was the founder of self-authored technical university textbooks in China. Liu Xianzhou was a deputy to the First, Second, Third, and Fourth National People’s Congresses. Mao Zedong once specially invited him to attend the Supreme State Conference. He made significant contributions to the educational and scientific endeavors of New China. He passed away in Beijing in 1975.

In 1945, Liu Xianzhou purchased a residence at No. 20, Xufuxiang, Nanjing. In 1963, due to demolition, it was rebuilt at No. 32-2, Gaoyunling using the original materials and in the original style, with a floor area of 150 square meters. Liu Xianzhou lived here from 1963 to 1972.

Liu Xianzhou (1890.1.27–1975.10.16), a mechanical engineering expert, was from Wan County, Hebei. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong in 1918, earning a “First-Class Honors” diploma. He served as the vice president and professor at Tsinghua University. He was engaged in educational work for a long time. During his teaching career, he insisted on lecturing in Chinese and was committed to compiling a variety of Chinese-language teaching materials, becoming the founder of self-authored technical university textbooks in China.
