Hu Lian’s Former Residence

Hu Lian’s Former Residence is located at No. 10 Guling Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The building was constructed in 1934, featuring a Western architectural style, facing west with an eastern orientation. It has a brick-concrete structure, a three-story pointed roof, red tiles with yellow walls, wooden doors and windows, and an open-air balcony on the southwest corner of the second floor. There are also two single-story buildings, making a total of three structures with 15 rooms.

The property was originally registered under the name of Hu Lian’s wife, Zeng Guangyu, by Hu Lian, a Nationalist Army General of the first rank. Before liberation, it was used as the Beijing office of the 18th Army. After liberation, it was occupied by the Second Field Army and the Garrison Command. Currently, the property is owned by the Municipal Real Estate Management Company.

Hu Lian, of Han ethnicity, was born in Huazhou, Shaanxi (now Beihui Dongfang Village, Chishui Town, Huazhou District, Weinan City). He was a General of the first rank in the Army of the Republic of China, a graduate of the fourth class of the Whampoa Military Academy, and a member of Chen Cheng’s “Earth and Wood” faction. He was a renowned general in the later period of the Nationalist government’s rule over mainland China. Alongside Hu Zongnan, he was known as one of the “Two Hus,” with the former nicknamed the “King of Kinmen” and the latter the “King of the Northwest.” However, a saying popular among Chiang Kai-shek’s troops went: “Ten Kings of the Northwest cannot compare to one King of Kinmen.”
