Lei Zhen's Former Residence

Lei Zhen's Former Residence is located within the courtyard at No. 5 Xiqiao, situated between Si Tiao Alley and Yunnan Road in Gulou District.

The building was constructed in 1935, faces north, and was originally a luxurious garden-style residence. Only the main Western-style building and five single-story houses remain today. The structure features a bluish-gray brick exterior façade and a faux three-story design with dormer windows. The property was purchased under the name of Song Ying (Lei Zhen’s wife), who once served as a member of the Supervisory Yuan of the Nationalist Government.

Lei Zhen (1897–1979), courtesy name Jinghuan, was from Wushan, Changxing. In 1912, he entered Huzhou Provincial Third Middle School (now Huzhou High School) and later went to Japan to study. In 1917, he joined the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang). In 1923, he was admitted to the Department of Political Science at Kyoto Imperial University’s Faculty of Law, majoring in administrative law, and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree. He returned to China in 1927 and served as principal of Huzhou Provincial Third Middle School but resigned half a year later. He then worked as an editor at the Legal System Bureau of the Nationalist Government, later transferring to the Translation Bureau as a compiler while also serving as an instructor at the Central Military Academy and a constitutional law professor at the National Central University.
