Former Residence of Xue Yue

The former residence of Xue Yue is located at No. 23 Jiangsu Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The building was self-constructed by Xue Yue in 1936 (the 25th year of the Republic of China) after he purchased the land. It covers an area of 795.6 square meters. The property includes one two-story Western-style building with 13 rooms, and one row of five new-style single-story rooms, totaling 18 rooms. The residence faces north and features red bricks and gray tiles, built with a brick-and-wood structure.

Xue Yue (December 27, 1896 – May 3, 1998), courtesy name Boling, was of Han ethnicity and a native of Xiaopingshi Village, Jiufeng Town, Lechang County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province. He was of the Hakka people. Originally named Xue Yangyue, he was given the name in honor of the Song Dynasty anti-Jin national hero Yue Fei, whom his father admired during the First Sino-Japanese War. Xue Yangyue later changed his name to Xue Yue to signify not only admiration for Yue Fei but also a commitment to following his example.

A graduate of the sixth class of the Baoding Military Academy, after returning to Guangdong, he once served as the commander of the First Battalion of Sun Yat-sen’s Guard Regiment.
