Former Residence of Ai Wei

The former residence of Ai Wei is located at No. 24 Gaoyunling.

The building is situated on the east side of Gaoyunling Road and is a uniquely charming Western-style large bungalow. With a construction area of 180 square meters, it was built in the 1930s. The structure is of brick-concrete composition, featuring blue bricks and red tiles, a hip-and-valley roof, and bears a slight resemblance to Japanese architectural style. There are also two later-added two-story buildings within the courtyard, which are not large in size and were not built in the same period. It is recorded that the Republican-era building at No. 24 Gaoyunling was originally Ai Wei’s private property during his time in Nanjing. Ai Wei once served as Dean of the School of Education at the National Central University, among other positions.

Ai Wei (1891–1955), originally named Hua Yong and styled Xianzhou, was from Shashi. In his childhood, he studied at a private school and worked as an apprentice in a money shop. Later, he joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance). At the age of 19, he was admitted to the YMCA College in Yichang and subsequently attended St. Paul’s High School in Anqing. In the 8th year of the Republic of China (1919), he graduated with honors from St. John’s University in Shanghai and was appointed as a teacher at Beijing Chongshi Middle School. In the autumn of the 10th year of the Republic of China, he entered the Teachers College of Columbia University in New York, USA, specializing in psychology, and earned a master's degree the following year.
