Former Residence of Wu Yifang

The former residence of Wu Yifang is located at No. 15 Fuhougang.

The building was originally constructed in 1935 by Ai Wei, faces south, has two floors, and is designed in a Western-style villa architecture with a brick-concrete structure. It features a beige exterior wall and red-tiled roof, covering a construction area of 118 square meters. There is also a single-story building with five rooms, spanning about 60 square meters. After the liberation, Wu Yifang once lived here.

Wu Yifang’s former home is simple and elegant. In the courtyard stands a white marble statue of Wu Yifang, whose wise, gentle, and kind gaze is captured in the sculpture. The Wu Yifang Memorial Hall displays historical photos and personal belongings of Wu Yifang, as well as the “Wu Yifang Memorial Collection” with a cover inscribed by [name redacted].

Wu Yifang (1893–1985), also known as Dongsheng, was born in Taixing, Jiangsu Province, but in Wuchang, Hubei. She was China’s first female university student and the second female university president. In 1928, she was appointed to her alma mater, Ginling Women's College, where she served as president for 23 years. In 1945, she attended the founding conference of the United Nations and became the first woman to sign the United Nations Charter. In 1979, she was awarded the "Goddess of Wisdom" prize by the University of Michigan in the United States, which honors outstanding women worldwide. She passed away on November 10, 1985.
