Former Residence of Gao Yihan

The former residence of Gao Yihan is located at No. 3 Mogan Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The building was constructed before 1935 in a Western modern architectural style. It consists of one two-story building with 12 rooms and one single-story building with 3 rooms. The walls are gray and the roof is blue-green. It was originally owned by Gao Yihan (original name Mengbi). In 1987, it was sold by Gao’s descendants to Yu Wenrui. It is now privately owned by Xia Ping.

Gao Yihan (1885–1968), originally named Yonghao, also known as Hanlu and Mengbi, was from Nanguanting in present-day Lu’an City. He was born in the 11th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1885). As a child, he was intelligent and studious, able to compose poetry and prose at the age of 13, and passed the imperial examination at the age of 14. In the 3rd year of the Xuantong reign (1911), he graduated from Anhui Advanced School. In the 1st year of the Republic of China (1912), he went to Japan for self-funded study, enrolling in Meiji University to study political science and law. He returned to China in the 5th year of the Republic of China and co-founded the Morning Post with Li Dazhao.
