Former Site of the Nationalist Government’s Judicial Yuan

The former site of the Nationalist Government is located at No. 251 Zhongshan Road. The Nationalist Government was established on November 16, 1928, serving as the highest judicial administrative body of the government. The Ministry of Judicial Administration was founded on November 12, 1928, and was responsible for managing national judicial administrative affairs. In 1935, the new building was completed, and both the -- and the Ministry of Judicial Administration moved their offices here from Xuejia Lane. Originally, this was a gray, north-south oriented three-story building constructed with a Western-style brick, wood, and concrete structure. The main building sat in the center, topped with a hemispherical dome adorned with a clock, and a flagpole stood atop. Flanking the main building were auxiliary wings. The entire complex had 108 rooms, with two symmetrical large gardens in front. The old-style gatehouse in front of the main building’s entrance, standing to the west and facing east, featured a classical European architectural style. It had a three-bay layout—narrower in the middle and wider on the sides—with its top decorated with patterned carvings. Eight massive Greek columns gave the gate an imposing, elegant, solemn, and majestic presence. On the night of April 23, 1949, the office building caught fire, and most of the structures were burned down. Only the gatehouse remained intact. The site is now occupied by the Nanjing Power Supply Bureau.

In June 2006, the former site of the Nationalist Government was designated as a Nanjing Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the Nanjing Municipal People’s Government.
