Former Residence of Hou Jingru

The former residence of Hou Jingru is located at No. 39 Dafang Lane.

The building was constructed in 1948 and includes three auxiliary structures such as a guardhouse. The main structure covers a construction area of 487.8 square meters, and with the addition of the three auxiliary bungalows, the total construction area is 557.8 square meters. The main building faces south and features a Western-style design with a faux three-story layout and dormer windows, a beige exterior wall, a hip-and-gable roof, and an alternating pattern of gray and red tiles.

Hou Jingru (1902–1994) was born on October 17, 1902 (the 16th day of the 9th month in the 28th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty). A native of Yongcheng, Henan, his birth name was Hou Xinlang, but he went by his courtesy name. In May 1924, he was admitted to the first class of the Whampoa Military Academy and was appointed as a probationary second lieutenant in the 3rd Platoon, 7th Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment (commanded by Regimental Commander He Yingqin) of the academy’s Instructional Brigade upon graduation in November.

In February 1925, Hou Jingru participated in the First Eastern Expedition of the National Revolutionary Army.
