Former Residence of Chen Bulei

The former residence of Chen Bulei is located at No. 6 Yihelu, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The building was constructed in 1936 (the 25th year of the Republic of China) on land purchased by Xu Tinghu, then Director of the Agricultural Department under the Ministry of Industry of the Nationalist Government. Before the War of Resistance against Japan, Chen Bulei and his family had always lived here. After the victory in the war, Chen Bulei returned to the capital with his family. However, as the house on Yihelu had been occupied, he had to temporarily stay in Shanghai. Three months later, he returned to Nanjing and, with the help of Ma Chaojun, rented a house at No. 508 Hunan Road (currently No. 15 Jiangsu Road). As the building is part of the Yihelu Twelve-Area Historic District, the government funded its renovation in 2008.

Chen Bulei (1890–1948), whose original name was Chen Xun’en, with the courtesy name Yanji and pseudonym Weilei, wrote under the pen name Bulei. A native of Cixi, Zhejiang, he gained fame in the press industry in his twenties due to his exceptional talent. During the War of Resistance against Japan, Chen Bulei penned numerous immortal articles that inspired national spirit with his powerful writing, earning him the titles of the “literary brain trust of the Nationalist leadership” and the “strategist of the Generalissimo.” He was widely known as the “Number One Pen of the Nationalist Party.” He remains a highly notable and controversial figure in modern Chinese history.
