Former Residence of Zheng Jiemin

The former residence of Zheng Jiemin is located at No. 22 Guling Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The building was constructed in 1935 in a Western modern architectural style. Originally, the property was registered under the name of Liu Maoen’s wife, Peng Baozhen, as Liu owned numerous properties in Nanjing and later gifted it to his brother, Liu Zhenhua. Before the liberation, it was rented by Zheng Jiemin, and after the liberation, it was borrowed by the administrative offices of the Second and Third Field Armies and the military garrison company.

Zheng Jiemin (1897–1959) was the former director of the Military Statistics Bureau of the Kuomintang and a second-class general in the Army. His original name was Tingbing, courtesy name Yaquan, and alias Jiefu. He was from Xiashui Village, Baofang Township. He studied at Wenchang Middle School but dropped out at the age of sixteen before going to Malaya to work as a laborer. In early 1924, he returned to Guangzhou and applied to join the first class of the Whampoa Military Academy but was not admitted. He then attended the Guard Army Wubei School run by Wu Tiecheng, who was both the mayor of Guangzhou and commander of the Guard Brigade. In August, he was admitted to the second class of the Whampoa Military Academy and assigned to the Infantry Department. Liu Maoen was a very complex and important historical figure. Early on, he followed his warlord brother Liu Zhenhua, campaigning across regions to expand territory, aligning himself among various political parties and warlords. He successively pledged allegiance to Sun Yat-sen, Yuan Shikai, Feng Yuxiang, Yan Xishan, and ultimately joined Chiang Kai-shek of the Kuomintang.
