Former Residence of Ma Hongkui

The former residence of Ma Hongkui is located at No. 2 and No. 2-1, Ninghai Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

This building was purchased in early 1949 by Ma Hongkui under the name of his eldest son, Ma Dunhou. It consists of one two-story building with 22 rooms and three rows of single-story houses totaling 10 rooms. The structure features a Western modern architectural style, with red walls and blue-tiled roofs.

Ma Hongkui (1892–1970), courtesy name Shaoyun, childhood name Sanyuan, was an ethnic Hui from Yangwashan, Hanji Town, Linxia County. He was the eldest son of Ma Fuxiang. Influenced by his family’s emphasis on education and martial arts from a young age, he studied and practiced martial disciplines. At the age of 18, he entered the Gansu Military Academy, where he participated in anti-Qing activities, secretly joined the Tongmenghui, and was arrested and imprisoned by Qing troops. He was released after efforts by Ma Fuxiang secured his bail. Later, Ma Fuxiang ordered him to join the military, where he served as an instructor for the “Zhaowu Army,” a cavalry battalion adjutant, and led forces to block Bai Lang.
