Former Residence of Chen Cheng on Lingyin Road

The former residence of Chen Cheng is located at No. 11 Lingyin Road, Gulou District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The house was built in 1940 in a Western modern architectural style. It includes one two-and-a-half-story building with 15 rooms, one single-story wing with one room, and one single-story simple shed with galvanized iron covering, featuring yellow walls and a gray roof. Originally registered under the name Xu Shaoqing by Chen Jianxiu, the property was later purchased by Chen Cheng. The courtyard contains rockeries, a pond, stone steps, and plants.

Chen Cheng (1898–1965), courtesy name Cixiu, childhood name Dexin, also known as Shisou, was from Gao Shi Township, Qingtian. After graduating from Yangzheng Primary School in his hometown, he attended the Provincial No. 11 Normal School in Lishui. In 1918, he transferred into the Provincial Physical Education School and graduated after just one month. Coinciding with the election of his father’s old friend and fellow townsman, General Du Zhiyun, as a member of parliament, Chen sought his patronage. Using a diploma from Zhoushan Middle School, he impersonated someone else to apply for admission to the Baoding Military Academy but failed due to poor performance.
