Nanjing Victory Square

Victory Square is a commemorative square built in early 1999 by the People's Government of Xiaguan District to mark the 50th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's Liberation Army's Yangtze River Crossing Campaign and the liberation of Nanjing. The square is situated at the northwest corner of the intersection of Daqiao South Road and Jianning Road, covering an area of 11,000 square meters. Construction started on March 10, 1999, and was completed on April 22, with a total investment of 4 million yuan.

The center of the square is semi-circular, symbolizing a "rising sun," while the floor tiles radiate outward, representing "rays of light." At the center stands a full-body statue of Liu Bocheng, the first mayor of Nanjing Municipal People's Government, inscribed by General Secretary Jiang Zemin. The statue is 5 meters tall, with a base that is 4.23 meters high, symbolizing the 50th anniversary of the victory of the Yangtze River Crossing and the liberation of Nanjing, as well as the liberation anniversary date of April 23. In front of the statue is a fountain pool decorated with plum blossom patterns—the city flower of Nanjing—symbolizing the deep reverence of Nanjing’s citizens for Liu Bocheng. On both sides of the square are semi-circular recreational areas for the public. The landscaping mainly features tall fescue turf and evergreen trees, supplemented by seasonal flowers, creating a landscape of “flowers in three seasons and greenery all year round,” which perfectly complements the square's elegant and solemn atmosphere.

On the morning of April 22, 1999, Jiangsu Province and Nanjing City jointly held a grand ceremony in the newly completed Victory Square to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the victory of the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign and the liberation of Nanjing, as well as the unveiling ceremony of the Liu Bocheng statue. Leaders from the provincial, municipal, and district party, government, military, and people's congress and political consultative conference bodies, veterans who participated in the Yangtze River Crossing Campaign, retired cadres and leaders, family members and former close associates of Marshal Liu Bocheng, and over 5,000 representatives from all walks of life in the province, city, and district attended the event.
