Former Site of the Nanjing Branch of the Bank of China

The former site of the Nanjing Branch of the Bank of China is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The former site of the Nanjing Branch of the Bank of China was built in 1923. After enduring 86 years of weathering, it still stands with great presence. Six sturdy stone pillars stand firmly, and the patterns on the stone platform at the top are simple yet exquisite.

On February 14, 1912, the Nanjing branch of the Bank of China opened at Bao Zhu Lang in the southern part of the city (now No. 23 Bai Xia Road), becoming one of the earliest institutions established within the Bank of China system. During the Republic of China period, the Nanjing branch, as the first central bank at that time, issued the Bank of China “Nanjing Note,” which became the first banknote printed and issued by the Bank of China after its establishment, and was later hailed as the “First Republic Note.”

On December 2, 2017, it was included in the “Second Batch of China’s 20th Century Architectural Heritage.”
