Xuzhou Ciji Temple

Ciji Temple, also known as the Five Poisons Temple, is located on the east bank of the Old Yellow River in Xuzhou, in Dizang Lane, Damatou, Gulou District. Originally built in the fourth year of the Tianqi era during the Ming Dynasty, it was later submerged due to flooding from the Yellow River. It was rebuilt in the 27th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1762 AD). Currently, three brick-and-timber halls remain, featuring column-supported corridors, small clay tiles on the roof, and flush gable walls. Inside the halls are three steles inscribed with the “Record of the Reconstruction of Ciji Temple,” which document that: “Ciji Temple was originally a Buddhist site established by Madam Huo of the late Ming Dynasty. Due to years of weathering and damage, compounded by silt deposits from the Yellow River, only one pavilion remained standing. The temple’s head nun, Zhao Rui, solicited donations through written appeals. With the heartfelt support of contributors such as Madam Zhang of the Liu family, the temple was gradually restored and expanded.” The steles are dated to the ninth month (September) of the 27th year of the Qianlong reign in the Qing Dynasty.
