Dongshuanggou Qingyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery
Dongshuanggou Qingyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism attraction.
Dongshuanggou Qingyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery primarily commemorates martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the War of Resistance against Japan.
In early August 1940, Commander Luo Binghui led the 8th and 10th Regiments of the New Fourth Army’s 5th Detachment and the 7th Regiment of the 4th Detachment north across the Sanhe River to establish the Huaibao region. On August 16, during the battle to capture Shuanggou, 10 soldiers of the New Fourth Army died as martyrs. After the liberation, in memory of these martyrs, the Dongshuanggou Town government built a mass grave for the 10 unnamed soldiers.
In April 1990, Dongshuanggou Town renovated and expanded the mass grave of the 10 unnamed martyrs on the original site. The martyrs’ tomb was changed from an earthen mound to one made of poured cement, covered with marble, which was inscribed with the martyrs’ main deeds. The cemetery was also expanded to cover an area of 1,800 square meters, with a construction area of 1,500 square meters and a burial area of 600 square meters, and was officially named “Dongshuanggou Qingyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery.” The remains of martyr Li Qingxiang from Qingxiang Village in Dongshuanggou Town were also relocated to the cemetery for commemoration, and a martyrs’ monument was erected. In April 2011, as part of the “Martyrs’ Comfort Project,” the town government relocated the remains of seven martyrs scattered across the town to the cemetery. Currently, there are nine martyr tombs in the cemetery, housing the remains of 18 martyrs.
Dongshuanggou Qingyun Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery is located 100 meters north of Qingyun Bridge in Qingyun Residential Committee, Dongshuanggou Town, and can be directly accessed via a cement road. The memorial square in the cemetery is 30 meters long and 50 meters wide, paved with cement. A monument facing south and backed by the north stands in the cemetery. It is built of brick, with a square base measuring 2.5 meters in both length and width, and the monument itself is 8 meters tall, topped with a red five-pointed star and inscribed with eight red characters: “Revolutionary Martyrs Live Forever.” On the east and west sides of the northern face of the monument are two martyr tombs. The one on the east is the mass grave of the 10 unnamed martyrs who bravely died in the battle to liberate Huaibao, while the one on the west is the tomb of Martyr Li Qingxiang. The northernmost row consists of seven horizontal martyr tombs, which were newly relocated in 2011.
