Erhe Sluice
Erhe Sluice is a Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Erhe Sluice is located 7 kilometers northeast of Gaoliangjian Town in Hongze District, on the Hongze Lake embankment north of the Subei Irrigation Main Canal. It serves as the main outlet for the Sea Outfall Channel and the Huai River Diversion to the Yi River, playing comprehensive roles in flood discharge, irrigation, and diverting Yi River water to the Huai River. The sluice was designed by the Survey and Design Institute of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Water Resources and constructed by the Second Engineering Team of the Provincial Water Resources Department. Construction began on November 11, 1957, and it was completed in August 1958. The sluice has a total of 35 bays, each with a clear width of 10 meters, giving a total width of 402 meters. The base elevation of the sluice is 8 meters, and the top elevation is 19.5 meters. The clear height of the sluice bays is 8 meters. Arc-shaped steel gates are used for water retention, controlled by 2×250KC hoist-type gates. The highway bridge above the sluice has a clear width of 7 meters, with the working bridge deck at an elevation of 28 meters. The highway bridge is designed for a highway classification of 13-ton vehicles, with a verification load of 60-ton trailers. Erhe Sluice is a control project for diverting downstream Huai River floodwaters into the Xin Yi River and for temporary flood diversion north of the canal. It has a design flow rate of 3,000 cubic meters per second, with a verification capacity of 4,000 cubic meters per second. In the event of a once-in-a-millennium flood, it can divert up to 9,000 cubic meters per second of floodwater—5,000 cubic meters per second via temporary flood diversion north of the irrigation canal, and 4,000 cubic meters per second through the Xin Yi River into the sea, ensuring the safety of the Lixiahe area. The sluice also functions as an inlet for the Huai River North Transfer Project, conveying irrigation water at a flow rate of 750 cubic meters per second to supply 10.3 million mu of farmland in the four cities of Huai'an, Yancheng, Lianyungang, and Suqian, as well as providing industrial and domestic water for Lianyungang. Additionally, when water from the Yi and Si Rivers is abundant, up to 300 cubic meters per second can be diverted into Hongze Lake via the Middle Canal to supplement shortages in the Huai River supply.
In December 2011, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government listed it as part of the seventh batch of Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.
